Rochon, Pierre (b. BET 1687 AND 1689, d. 09 OCT 1747)
Note: Piedmont Region of Northern Italy. Amtsfield shows Inverso Pinasca, Pomaretto Perosa, Torino,
Note: In the XVI and XVII century, the town(Pinasca, Italy 33 miles WSW from Turino) was involved in the wars between Catholics and Waldenses, who in 1571 had built their own temple in the area of Podio. They, then, emigrated to Germany, the Waldenses gave the name of PINASCA (PINACHE) to the village that they founded there, in honour of the hospitality that they had received.

On Sept. 18, 1714 Pierre pledged allegience with the Duke and became the Municipal Mathematician on Jan 1, 1717, then Village Mayor of Pinache in 1733. Death Register shows that "The statement and witness of his death came from Mathieu Nirel, Jeremie Chapelle (Begleiter?). Also there when he died was David Vint and Pierre Manoval and other witnesses. They came there on October 7, 1747.

Notes from "300 Anni dei Valdesi in Germania 1699 - 1999" ( "300 Years of the Valdesi in Germany 1699 - 1999 ")
" In vast areas along the border between the properties of the Duchy of Wčurttemberg and the Margrave Baden-Durlach, Because of the war that lasted for over thirty years and the wars that have entered in the history of succession to the throne (1688 - 1697) Ludwig XIV, the population had declined dramatically. Perhaps for this reason, the young Duke Eberhard Ludwing of Wčurttemberg (born in 1676) was prepared to accept in its territory a part of the nearly 3,000 Protestant refugees, who had fled from Piedmont in September 1688.

These Waldensians had received hospitality only for the winter from Switzerland and had to find a place where fixed settle. The refugees who had settled in Maulbronn in Leonberg (circa 1700 to 2000) had arrived in May 1699 in Dčurrmenz. Not having enough seats available emergency, optáo accommodation for the final. According to the decree of 10 June 1699 Martin Greber of Maulbronn, immediately began to distribute to each family on their piece of land.

Most people around 1200 families (535 people) had their land near the intersection of the two roads Vaihingen-Enz/Pforzheim and Durrmenz / Wiernsheim. In memory of their native country that was called Pinache (today Pinasca) gave at that place called Pinache. A small number of refugees who have come from Pinasca and accepted by the Municipality of Wiernsheim, took their place among Wiernsheim, Iptingen, GroĎglattbach and Mčonsheim, they gave the name of Serres in this area, not least because the majority of them came from a village called Serre . Important witnesses of those times have surnames that there are still as: Ayasse, Baral, Baret, Bertet, Castan, Gille, Giraud, Jurdan, Juvenal, Micol, Mondon, Rivoir, Rochon, Roux, Talmon ... !

Immediately refugees gave a lot to be done to make the land productive: it was hard work. The success came not just because they had the misfortune of hailstorms and bad weather that destroyed several times for the harvest. He spent a long time before the houses made of wood and axes mud houses were replaced by normal. Many in the early years of trials and hardships in mind was to leave Pinache and Serres. Even in 1720, about 20 people left in the direction of Brandenburg in the hope of finding a better life, then returned back many, others through various movements arrived in Oberweser founded there in the municipalities of Gottstreu and Gewissenruh. Thanks to the privileges granted them by Duke, villages were partly Waldensians their independence and their jurisdiction. They spoke (until 1950) or the Patois Welsch and church and the French school, which, however, made it difficult to communicate with their German neighbours and isolava them negatively.

At Serres depended on Pinache and still share the pastor. Thanks to generous offers of the common Wčurttemberg, the Netherlands, England and Switzerland it was possible to replace the old wooden church. In Serres it arrived in 1761, while Pinache was inaugurated in 1721 (now the oldest church mass). Even in the 1796 Teacher of Serres had to be made available to pupils who needed a local school. In 1812 it was built in the Serres City Hall with local craft school and Pinache in 1821".

Gayde, Catherine (b. 1689, d. 28 APR 1754)
Note: Amtsfield shows date as "Abt 1695"
Note: The name Catherina shown as another derivation.
The Gayde family is of Waldensian origin. They came 1699 together with many other Waldensian refugees (Baral, Micol, Roux, Rochon, Talmon a.o.) to Wuerttemberg and Baden. The winter before they rested in Switzerland but they were from Piemont (Italy). In the area Dčurrmenz (today Mčuhlacker) and Hengstett (today Althengstett) they received unused land. Near the German villages, they then founded their own villages (Pinache, Serres, Perouse, GroĎ- and Kleinvillars, Neuhengstett). It is not known yet how many Gayde's in Germany arrived, but it is sure, a Jean Gaidou lived about 1700 in Serres.
Today the name is written "Gayde", About 1700 it was spelled "Gaidou" and "Gaide", But since around 1750 only found as "Gaide".

Rochon, Anne Marguerita (b. 04 APR 1734, d. 1786)
Note: Marguerita may be Margaretha ROSCHON married 9 Sep to Peter WILHELM . They came to Philadelphia from Isenburg, on ship St. Andrew, from Rotterdam, last of Plymouth ENG. This would mean that Marguuuerita predated Pierre, Phillipe and Henrit, having arrived in 1734. Until proven otherwise and for continuity sake This assumption will be carried forward. Rouchon, Catherine (b. 01 SEP 1725, d. Abt 1744)
Note: She is thought have died as a result of complications associated with childbirth
Note: LDS records show B. Date as 01-SEP-1725 & that she must have emmigrated, Phyllis Schappell, family researcher, indicates otherwise. Marriage to John Tiers is questionable given Catherine's questionable death date. This may have been another Catherine, not yet discovered.

ADOLF. GERBER, Neue Beitraege zur Auswanderung nach Amerika im 18. Jahrhundert aus Altwuerttembergischen Kirchenbuechernunter Hinzuzieh indicates an immigration1753 to Philadelphia America for a Catherine Rouchon. This is perhaps fo another Catherine yet to be researched.

The Tiers Family and the Rouchon Family appear to be closely allied. While Catherine Chappelle, nee Rouchon was married to Jeremie Chappelle, they were Godparents to children of Etienne Tiers and Madeline Servay. (See following)

i. SUZANNE TIERS, b. February 17, 1740/41, Kleinvillers, Wurrentber,,Germany; d. Unknown.
Notes for SUZANNE TIERS:

There are 2 records about 1 year apart and It is likekly one died and they named their next son Pierre Jeremie or the pastor made a duplicate entry.

Rouchon, Henri (b. 09 NOV 1730, d. 01 JUL 1784)
Note: Amtsfield shows another date as 23 SEP 1730, however, Falkner Swamp Reformed Church Records indicate age at time of death as 53 yrs, 7mos, 22 days indicating a birth date as 09 NOV 1730. They also indicate he was "not married". Does this mean at the time of death or that he was never married?

Emigration to Pennsylvania
The Palatine Project: Ship Arrivals
Pennsylvania German Pioneers

During the period 1750 through 1753, 15 families emigrated from the Dčurrmenz-Mčuhlacker area to Pennsylvania, including the family of Salomon Chapelle. It is hard to imagine what would drive these people to carry out the long, dangerous trip across the sea. Perhaps the years of suffering from hunger, lack of available land and paying high taxes to both the church and state caused sufficient desperation to make the trip look worthwhile. Then there was the lingering issue of their freedom to practice religions other than Lutheran or Catholic. Perhaps it was becoming increasingly clear the reformed religion in Wčurttemberg would eventually be overwhelmed by pressure from the Lutherans. Match all of this against the optimistic stories of abundant land, religious and civil freedoms, and potential prosperity coming back from the colonies. In 1751, Salomon Chapelle made his decision to relocate to America, with his 19 year old son Eberhart. His oldest son Jeremie, perhaps already knowing his wife Madeleine was expecting another child, emigrated two years later with a larger group of families from that area. He may also have delayed just to give the first emigrants time to become established in Pennsylvania while he took care of selling the families land back in Germany. No record of Salomon is found in the ship records (or in Pennsylvania), so he probably died before or during the trip. An examination of some of their fellow travelers follows.

The following were among the immigrants arriving on the Ship Patience, Captain Hugh Steel, originating in the port of Rotterdam and lastly from Cowes, England; 255 passengers were on board. They were qualified at Philadelphia, Monday, 9 September 1751, in the presence of the Mayor.

Name Signature Research Notes
Eberhart Chappelle Unlike Dčurrmenz church records, name now spelled with two "p"s.
Daniel Tien [Tiers] Son of Simon Thiers / Tiers and his wife Francoise, nee Morel.
Jean Henri Pierre / Tien [Tiers] Henry Tiers and Catherine Chapelle nee Rouchon sponsored the baptism of a child of Paul Cafferel (see 1753 list below) in 1743. Jean Henry and Catherine were married. Son of Daniel Thiers/Tiers, and cousin of Daniel above. Henry's brother, Etienne, supposedly emigrated in 1751 to PA, but is not on the ship list. Daniel (the father), was married to Marte Morel, Daughter of Henry Morel.
Matthieu Moret [Morel] A Matieu Morel and Elizabeth, nee Ozias, sponsored the baptism of Jeremie and Madeleine Chapelle's son Matieu on 22 April 1746.

The following were among the immigrants arriving on the Ship Patience, Captain Hugh Steel, originating in the port of Rotterdam and lastly from Cowes, England. They were qualified at Philadelphia, Monday, 17 September 1753, in the presence of Benjamin Franklin, Esquire. This is a good example of how the Germans usually emigrated in groups, less frequently alone. There were numerous other French names in the list that probably could be linked to Dčurrmenz if researched.

Name Age Signature Research Notes
Jeremie Chappelle 25 Unlike Dčurrmenz church records, name now spelled with two "p"s. Actually was age 27 at the time.
Jean Pierre Chappelle --- A Jean Pierre Chapelle was married in 1750 to a Catharine Don, in Pinache, a village about 5 km south of Dčurrmenz.
Peter Roshon / Pierre Rouchon 22 Jeremie Chapelle's first two wives, Catherine and Madeleine, were both Rouchon. Further research needed on Rouchon family in Dčurrmenz and Pinache records.
Hendrick Roshon / Henri Rouchon 20 Jeremie Chapelle's first two wives, Catherine and Madeleine, were both Rouchon.
Peter Goodier / Pierre Gautier [Cordier] 31 There was a Pierre Cordier and wife Anne in the Waldenser church of Dčurrmenz
Jacob Goodier / Jaques Goutier [Cordeir] 27 There was a Jaques Cordier and wife Suzanne in the Waldenser church of Dčurrmenz
Jean Jaques Servai [Servay] 29 Etienne Thiers, a Schčoenberg farmer, married Madelaine Servay, daughter of Simon Servay from GroĎvillars. Etienne left to emigrate to PA in 1751.
Paul Caffarel 45 There was a Paul Caffarel in the Waldenser church of Dčurrmenz
Mathias Dear / Matieu Tier 30 There was a Matieu Tiers and wife Suzanne in the Waldenser church of Dčurrmenz
Jacob Dear [Jaques Tiers] 18 Baptism entry in the Waldenser church of Dčurrmenz for Jean Jaques, son of Jaques and Madeleine Teirs, 12 Jan 1733.

There is an elementary problem relative to Henri Rochon and work done by researchers who have dealt
with records that may apply. The records of Falkner Swamp Reformed Church contain an entry in the burial
records for Henry Roshong dating his burial on July 1, 1784 with the notation that he was unmarried. Some
researchers have extrapolated this reference to arrive at the conclusion that he was never married and therefore
had no issue.John Amtsfield does not believe this to be the case as the records of First Reformed Church in Philadelphia indicate.
Henry married Catherine Unknown and had issue. The PA Archives make it clear that there were Roshon-
Roshongs that appeared in Philadelphia early including David and John that cannot be attributed to brothers
Pierre or Phillippe or to any other potential immigrant. The records of First Reformed Church in Philadelphia are
very explicit in listing a baptism for a daughter Catherine. How to restify these records with the burial record at
Falkner Swamp is problematic, but, if Henry was a widower at the time if his burial, he would have been
"unmarried" or if divorced as unusual as that is, he would also have been "unmarried". In any case, the record is
clear that henry had issue.

Immigrated with brother Pierre to America in 1753.

Philadelphia Supreme Court September 24-Ocotber 26, 1765 records Piere Roushon naturalized in Roxborough dated September 26, 1765

Brief notation claim that Peter was a redemptioner (that is he bargained for his passage by indenturing his service on arrival in Philadelphia. The story was that he was indentured to Dieter Bucher of FrederickTownship. Uncorroborated and likely impossible to document

The following note is taken from the notes found on page 83 of "George Philip Dodderer and His Descendants"
"Pierre Rochon was stopping at the house of Michael Dotterer when a heavy thunderstorm came up, and lightening struck the barn, burning it to the ground." This story was narrated by the late John Eidemiller, a grandson of Rochon, at Green Lane, PA< August 7, 1883.
