My Life

Mom, do you want me to fix that for you?
No! You break everything you touch.
Mother can I
drop that off at the post office for you?
Let me put a rubber band around those letters, I can’t trust you to do
anything.
I’m going to
run away from home.
Can I help you pack?
No, I really
mean it.
Well then I’ll pack your lunch.
You don’t love me anymore, I’m going to run out and
get hit by a car.
Here, let me open the door for you.
I’ll bet you love him more than you do
me.
Only a little bit.
I can change that light bulb for you
mom.
No, you’ll break it or fall off the stool and break your neck
.
Would you really send me to the children’s
home?
Yes if you don’t shut up and quit
crying.
You keep that up and I’ll give you something to cry
about.
You just wait
till your father gets home.
Go upstairs
and get the razor strap you fathers going to need it when he gets
home.
Shut the door, were you born in a
barn.
Mom, can Bobby Jones sleep over tonight, his mother
said he could.
Well then I guess so.
Hello Mrs. Jones can Bobby sleep over at my house
tonight? My mother said it would be OK if it’s OK with
you
Life and Adventures:
My interest in other
lands and sense of adventure was born in 1948,
when I was 10 years
old. I received a personal letter
from a teacher living in Wales UK.
She was
expressing thanks for a care package that my
5th grade class at
Baxter
Elementary School in Canton, Ohio had sent.( we had all signed our
names)
The teacher was
very classy to address each of us
separately.
Where was
Wales where was England, where was Japan, where was
Everywhere?
I was on my way
to find out!

(following
extrapolated from notes by Ronald L.Roshong (My
Bro)
I grew up in
Canton, Ohio during WWII and went to a lot of different schools.
My father went off to the war and served his time in the Navy in
the Pacific. Mom worked in an aircraft factory as a backup to
a Riveter

(the one who catches the rivets and seals
them).
Because times were hard and
rents were high, mom moved around a lot. For awhile, when I was about
three and a half, we lived on Cedar Ave. just north of Navar Road and the
railroad tracks. Then, when mom could no longer support the expenses of a
house, she moved to an apartment on 6th and Cedar. Both Ron, my
brother and I went with her. We lived there until I was in
the 1st grade and she had to move again, this time to an apartment off of
Cleveland Ave. at about 6th street NW. I went with her and Ron went
to live with my Grandparents on Shanabrook Road NE and stayed with them until
the war was over. Meanwhile, mom got a divorce from dad and married a
close friend of hers, Carl Arthur Zimmerman (a dear stepfather to both of
us). We moved in with his parents on Dueber Avenue just below 15th
street. I went to Garfield School and Ron went to Dueber
school. Then, we all moved to the "Projects", a
development of row houses up the hill from Baxter and adjacent to Cleveland
Avenue. These were low cost housing units developed for the returning
veterans and certainly within our budget. This was
1946.

Both Ron and I attended
Baxter Elementary from 1946 to 1950. After that, the family moved back to
Dueber Avenue...this time to our own home. I went to Dueber
School, and Ron went to Timken Vocational. Next, we moved
to 23rd St. NE and bought a larger home I wentto Bellestone School for the
eighth grade. Two years later, mom and dad move to Dover, DE and I went
with them. Ron remained in Canton to finish high school (he stayed
with our father Donald V. Roshong and his new bride Elizabeth (Betty)
Curran. We both feel that we have been doubly blest, having
two sets of loving parents. I attended Dover High School for my Fresman
& Sophmore year and then as a result of orneryness I was sent to live
with my dad Roshong in San Diego for my Junior year. I learned a lot there
and got some street smarts that I hadn't learned in Canton. That's another
story.
Life After High
School:
I joined the U.S. Army Reserve 23 AUG 1956,SN# ER 13581188. At the
age
of
17, I attended drills with Co. "C", 458th
Engr. Btn., 3rd Army
in
Dover DE.
I
began Basic training 06 OCT 1956 at Ft Jackson, SC, assigned to B
Co.,
12th Btn., 1st Army. At that
time I was trained by Airborne cadre of the
101st Airborne Div.
The 101st Airborne Division was reactivated as a training unit
at
Camp Breckinridge, Ky., in 1948 and again in 1950. It was reactivated
again in 1954 at Fort Jackson, S.C., and in March 1956, the 101st
was
transferred, less personnel and equipment to Fort Campbell,
Ky.,
to
be reorganized as a combat division.
After Basic, I was assigned to The Engineer Center Regiment at Ft.
Belvoir,
VA
for training in MOS 811.10 (Construction Drafting). I was at the
school
from 06 JAN 1957 to 05 APR
1957
I
was promoted to PFC on 01 MAY 1057.
Upon entering the University of Delaware, I was assigned to a file
cabinet
in Indian Town Gap, PA, while taking ROTC
.
I dropped out od the University
of Delaware for two years as a result of inattenion to
detail.
With two friends, one a
classmate, Jim Robinson, we decided to take route #66 West to
California.
It was the middle of
January and we drove a red 1956 Buick convertible to the West
Coast.
On the way we stopped
by the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley and then on to Fresno for some
skiing in Yosemite.
We split up and Jim and I went
on to San Francisco, California.
After a brief stint as a bank teller trainee for Bank of
America,
I stowed away with Jim on
a British Freightor, The SS Radnor for a three month voyage to Nagoya,
Japan.
After we were found out,
I was designated a Senior Ordinary Seaman in order to make enough pay
to sustain myself,
once we arrived, in Nagoya.
We had many unique experiences, at sea, that will be revealed,
later, on another page .
In 1960
I joined the active duty Air
Force, and served, for four years, as a
Weather Observer in;
Illinois,
Oklahoma and Alaska.
In 1976, after a
12 year break, I joined the Air Force Reserve .
I transfered to
the Air national Guard in 1979 and served until age
60.
In 1998 I was
forced to retire.
God Bless
America!

parallel life to military allegiance was spent in a variety of positions,
mostlyy associated with the Procurement Profession. Most of it is
encapsulated in the following faux
Obituary that I compiled a few years back. It reflects actual endeavors
and is intended to be humorus as well as to the point. I have kept it
current as I gracefully age:
